If you happen to be one of my friends on Facebook or if you follow me on my social media accounts, you would know that Mr. A and I own a very beautiful Persian cat named Perdita. We became cat lovers since the day we brought her into our home. When I found out about the existence of Cat Cafes in various places, it became a dream of mine to visit them one by one and to get to mingle with more cats of different breeds.
The first Cat Cafe I have been to was in Cebu located at SM Seaside. I really enjoyed that visit so I wished that a cat cafe would open in Davao City soon. Lo and behold, it’s finally here!
Enter, PURRBOX Cat Cafe
Purrbox is Davao City’s first Cat Cafe and had their soft opening just last May 6, 2017. This is the brainchild of three partners namely Arthur Ong, Erwin Tan and Keseree Ng. Each of the partners has a different role in running the cafe. Mr. Arthur Ong manages the cafe, Keseree Ng is responsible for the cafe’s architecture and Mr. Erwin Tan owns all of the cats of the cafe.
Initially, Mr. Arthur Ong wasn’t a cat lover. But when he met and bonded with the cats of Mr. Erwin Tan, he came to appreciate the feline friends on a different level. The cafe is carefully thought of by the partners with the help of their very own experiences in visiting cafes overseas such as in Thailand, South Korea and Japan.
INTERIOR (GROUND FLOOR)
I heard that their Dulce de Leche Cheesecake (Php 140) is really good. That’s my target order next time. Aside from that one, they also have Chocolate Mouse and Green Tea Matcha Crepe Cake Specialty Cakes.
The cafe has two floors. The first floor being the cafe itself and the second floor is where the cats’ playroom can be found. Aside from the cafe in the first floor, there are also other cat necessities and products being displayed on the side.
CAT NEEDS & WANTS
And take note, all the products sold in the cafe are very affordable and reasonably priced. I have a new place to shop for Perdita’s needs.
INTERIORS (SECOND FLOOR/ CATS’ PLAY AREA)
I love the minimalist + nature vibe of the cafe. The mixture of the color green is really pleasing to the eye and it makes the place more relaxed for the cats. Putting too much color in the cat cafe would make it loud and not really a place for chilling.
The cafe is really keen on cleanliness. Upon entering the play area on the second floor, the cat lady sprays liquid sanitizer on the hands of the guests. They also provide huge plastics for the guests and this is used to cover their bags. A reason for this is because cats tend to be territorial with things (believe me, my Perdita is one), and they might probably chew on the bags or do whatever since they see these things as their own.
Shoes are not allowed in the play area. So the guests are encouraged to wear socks upon entering the second floor and the cafe also provides slippers as well. If a customer does not have socks, a pair is sold in the cafe for a minimal price of Php 40.
Another plus point about this cat cafe is that the customers can actually enjoy their food while interacting with the cats. The one I tried in Cebu had a separate play room for the cats but food and drinks are not allowed. So I had to finish my drink in a jiff before I can enter. I had no problem with this issue at Purrbox. There wasn’t any pressure at all in finishing my meal before enjoying the company of the cats. I did, however, hear from one of the partner owners that they will limit the time of each client to an hour and half soon to give way to other paying customers and have their time with the cats as well.
During their soft opening, all twelve cats were there to greet the customers. The breeds of the cats in the cafe are Exotic Short Hair, Exotic Long Hair, British Short Hair, Siamese and Persian cats to name a few. On my visit which was the day after the soft opening, there were only four cats since the other cats were still very tired from mingling with the customers the previous day. I got to meet four cats – Samurai, Geisha, Bou and Blue. The friendliest of them all is Geisha. If you call her name, she responds with a very sweet MEOW. The others are still adjusting to interacting with the customers.
PURRBOX Cafe is located at J.P Laurel Avenue, Beside Nissan Car Showroom.
They are open from Tuesdays and Sundays and close on Mondays for place and cat maintenance.
And remember, if you plan on visiting the place, please be nice to the cats. They have feelings too 🙂
